Modals

Modals are a mechanism to display a pattern that is interruptive (blocks user from continuing), that may or may not have been prompted by the user and require an interaction to dismiss (close button or CTA or clicking outside the modal) in order to continue. In most cases this is a pop up or fly in.

Some examples: Search, “Are You Sure” pop up (used in subscriptions), and the banners that appear at the top or bottom of the page (alerts about your bill, subscription offers, etc.), although they are not technically interruptive because a user can continue scrolling to more content.
